Make It Speedy (Trade 24)

This trade was, let me see, about... almost 22 months in the making!

Sean in Wisconsin, USA, had made his offer wayyy back on September 11th, 2006, using the form...

I will trade you a llama for GreenPiece. Or, if transport and housing of a llama poses a challenge I can offer a large quantity of raw llama fiber for carding and spinning.

- Sean's offer

"Are you serious?..." I replied, because this was quite an unusual offer, as offers go. A real llama?

Sean was indeed serious, and he was offering Speedy, a one year old male llama. But although I thought the likelihood of a Speedy trade ever happening was about zero for all sorts of reasons, I thought why not put him up for a trade anyway, and if we somehow figured out two trades in one go so I don't have to take him with me, well...

If nothing else, I thought, a llama up for a trade would be a good laugh... so up for a trade he went!

Pretty soon, a variety of interesting offers came in - a good old car in Wisconsin (well, one side was better than the other...), an old Chevy pick up (a runner too!), a Rolex watch, Scottish garlic... - but none felt quite right.

But no matter, Speedy up for a trade also caught the eye of a few newspapers...

Many months passed.

Then, after the success of Trade 14, I was ready to consider more postal trades. And that got me thinking...

Not that I was thinking of having Speedy posted over - heck no! But a Speedy fibre trade by post maybe?

So in April this year, I made my offer of the lucky tigerDog hair for some Speedy fibre, to which Sean responded with the sad news that Speedy had passed away.

Very sad indeed. But I wondered if we could still somehow do a Speedy fibre trade, and at least keep Speedy's presence in this story alive. No harm in asking, I thought...

Sean came back with the good news that they still had a bag of Speedy fibre somewhere. And he wasn't keen on the tigerDog hair, but he did add a carrot: "Have an old beer stein lying around?".

I'm not quite in beer stein territory here, but I am in beer pint glass territory... so we fixed something for Sean in Trade 22.

Four used pint glasses plus four beer mats plus some newspaper clippings featuring Speedy the llama were sent by myself all the way over to Wisconsin.

And in return, Sean shipped me a bag of genuine Speedy fibre. The real and extremely rare stuff.

One of these guys is Sean, the other his son Angus...

So now I have another bag of animal hair up for a trade... right?

Well, yes and no. Sure I'll accept offers for it now, but I want be offering much more than a bag of Speedy hair - to be revealed in time I hope. All I can say for now is... watch this space.

Oh! I nearly forget... I pronounce Mandy in Ohio the winner of the what's-in-the-bag competition. Nobody guessed right, but Mandy sent me the most guesses, something like 10 I think... so well done Mandy! I'll be sending you your prize... just as soon as I have it to send :oD

RedBack Is Back, And I Have A Er... A Confession To Make

My daughter was flicking through her local rag The Kinsale Newsletter on Friday. Imagine her surprise, or shock maybe when...

Kinsale Newsletter, August 2008

Probably not overly surprised mind - she made it on to the front cover herself!

And now for a confession:

I dropped the trading nothing bottle of wine.

On to concrete.

Not good.

Don't ask.

Imagine my surprise, no astonishment when I looked down to see... a bottle of wine.

I think it must have landed upside down at just the right angle. Or maybe they make wine bottles bouncy these days.

Here's the damage...

Still a Fine Bottle of Chianti

I hope the contents taste better for it.

Also... the two versions of "The Anglo-American And World Recession Blues" are now available for download, at a dedicated MySpace page set up by Trade 21 Sarah...

A third of proceeds goes to the Mercy Corps.

Oh! I need to reveal Trade 24 later...
